Now, your first thought may be: Norway, that’s gotta be a lot like North America, right? Wrong! Let me begin to enlighten you… (please, do not be afraid, but rather continue on this exciting journey…)
Let’s start at the bottom and just see where we go. Garbage. You’d think that’s pretty simple and straightforward, wouldn’t you? Throw it away. Job complete. Or not…
We have three categories of garbage here (this is not including bottles or cans or what I would normally think of as recycling – this is just garbage!)
The brown bin (or container – as you can see the language is already starting to get to me… some people here actually thin that British English is normal!!) ok- the brown bin is for food garbage and gets really nasty dirty and smelly. There are special bio-degradable bags to put into these, but still the stuff gets out and I think the lowest job that you could do in this country is to clean out these bins! Nasty doesn’t do it justice! So, don’t make Norwegians angry or they will make you clean these out… with your toothbrush!!!! The green bin is for paper, cardboard and burnables. Then we can have big fires where we burn up everything we can think of (even things sometimes that I would consider to be unhealthy for the environment… but as I have been told by about 4.6 million Norwegians, it’s only one piece of plastic J). The black bin is for everything else that you might want to put into the garbage excluding your younger siblings.
